Teeth whitening, what are your choices?

"Teeth whitening" is a branch of cosmetic dentistry and one of the most common methods of achieving a whiter healthier smile. There are several methods one can use to eliminate teeth discoloration and stains generally caused by tea, coffee, red wine and smoking and brighten the natural pigmentation of the teeth. These methods include commercial teeth whitening gels and toothpastes, teeth whitening strips, bleaching gels with custom-fit trays and laser teeth whitening.
Teeth whitening toothpastes and gels are products containing mild abrasives and polishing agents which help in removing stains from the surface of the teeth. Although more effective than regular teeth cleansing products, they do not bleach the teeth.
Teeth whitening strips are usually thin clear strips of plastic containing hydrogen peroxide which are applied to the teeth. By leaving the strips on the teeth for short periods once or twice a day, the hydrogen peroxide penetrates the tooth enamel to oxidize the particles that cause the discoloration or stains, which in turn whitens the appearance of the teeth. The results can last anywhere between three to six months.
A more effective method of eliminating discoloration and stains and achieving whiter teeth is to use teeth whitening gels or bleaching gels with custom-fit trays. In this method, a clear tray which is molded to fit the teeth is used. The tray is then filled with a bleaching gel containing peroxide and inserted in the mouth over the teeth. The trays are worn anywhere between two to six hours or overnight depending on the strength of the peroxide. Teeth should be rinsed and the remaining gel brushed off after removal of tray. This procedure needs to be carried out a number of times to achieve the desired results.
The top of the line, teeth whitening treatment is professional "laser teeth whitening". The whole procedure takes about an hour. To begin, the teeth are cleaned and plaque is removed from the gum line. Then a professional strength formula of hydrogen peroxide is painted on the teeth. This bleaching gel is activated using laser or special light. The gel is then rinsed off. This procedure may have to be repeated more than once to get teeth whitened by as many as ten shades, but has superior long lasting results.
It is important to check with your dentist first before using any type of teeth whitening product.
